As we all know a soldier puts his life on the line for us to enjoy our privileges that we have today, through this article I would like to give a glimpse about how really a soldier puts his life on the line for us. Soldiers are trained to withstand the most unfavorable condition imaginable by a normal human being, be it in Iraq where a false step can mean imminent death. In the life of a soldier deployment is a regular event; each deployment can be entirely different in their nature which means mental adjustment is the key element. On deployment soldiers are subjected to extreme levels of mental emotions like alertness, anxiety or anticipation of a strike. Deployment can result in alterations in the mentality of a soldier. They would be used to a whole new level of ‘normality’. All this change is realized once he reaches back home where everything is normal. This would be one of the toughest transitions that they would face in their lives. There are many adverse situations which have to be faced in the process of coping back to normality.
Challenges faced post- deployment
- Understanding normal: Coping up with the normal behavior of people is one of the key challenges a soldier will have to face after a long deployment as his mind would be tuned to potential threats and at this state there is a total absence of personal feeling. This will take a considerable amount of time to adjust to.
- Cumulative stress effects: Soldiers would be used to a higher level of stress than normal people endure, this can cause agitation and depression in a person’s behavior. This can affect that person’s relationships.
- ‘Place’ in the family: This is one of the most frequent feeling that bother a returning soldier as all the needs are taken care by his close ones and might feel confused as to where he belongs.
- Emotional challenges: Soldiers are also subjected to many emotional challenges as they try to cope with the existing atmosphere.
As we can see that a soldier literally puts every aspect of his life on the line for the country and the safety of the citizens. Mental changes are one of the key challenges which a soldier has to face in his volatile life which involves a countless number of perils.
